LEGO Superheros!

Mike Fahey — Comic book worlds collide next year, as The LEGO Group announces a pair of deals that bring DC Comics' finest and the forces of the Marvel Universe under the banner of LEGO Super Heroes. Can new LEGO games be far behind?

San Diego Comic-Con kicks into high gear tomorrow, making it the perfect time for a toy company to reveal its latest comic book property, or in The LEGO Group's case, properties. Next year The LEGO Group is launching its LEGO Super Hero line of build-and-play adventure toys, and both Marvel Comics and DC Entertainment want to be a piece of it.

This means that next year we'll be seeing both an extension of the LEGO Batman line of toys featuring an extended cast of DC heroes and villains, but also a brand-spanking new lineup of Marvel toys as well. They won't be sold together, of course, but they'll play so very well together.

The multi-year agreement with DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Consumer Products grants The LEGO Group access to every character in DC canon, though initially the line will focus on a small number, including Batman, Robin, Catwoman, The Joker, The Riddler, Two-Face, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Bane, Bruce Wayne, Superman, Lex Luthor and Wonder Woman. Batman, The Joker, and Green Lantern will also get their own buildable figures.

Marvel's multi-year agreement kicks off with a focus on Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the 2012 Avengers movie. Characters being immortalized in LEGO form include Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, Loki, Black Widow, Wolverine, Magneto, Nick Fury, Deadpool, Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus, with buildable Captain America, The Hulk and Iron Man figures on the way.

Both new lines will have figures on hand at the LEGO booth at the San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, with 3,000 exclusive Batman and Green Lantern LEGO mini figures being handed out for use in the LEGO Super Heroes Challenge film and photo contest.

This is excellent news for a LEGO collector like myself. It could be even better news, should Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment get in on the DC Comics action, producing a follow-up to the wildly successful LEGO Batman. Perhaps Marvel will finally get on the LEGO video game bandwagon, coalescing decades of continuity into self-contained video game masterpieces. LEGO Thor? How about LEGO Frog Thor?

Or perhaps the biggest comic book / video game / LEGO fan dream will come true, and we'll see a LEGO video game where the Avengers face-off against the Justice League, Bat Man takes on Wolverine, and the X-Men keep the Teen Titans from doing drugs.

A few months ago Stephen Totilo wondered where the LEGO video game franchise would go next, now that the final Harry Potter films are getting their own blocky title. These new agreements may have answered his question.

I hope some interesting sets come out of this, and then some interesting MOCs after.

Also, there better be a Fortress of Solitude set.
