Reputation : lo and behold eh
I have been a member for a while and though my attendance has been to say the least in frequent, the hardest part is when I see my status is a rep of zero.
I'll cut to the chase, rep points are load of bricks and only serve to impower the ones who are allowed to hand them out and take them away.
If I were a mod here rep points would not exist, so I guess I just took away my application, thanks but no thanks.
Also, if I were a mod with the power to take a rep point away I would at least let the person know why they lost one.
Good luck with your forum, you will need it

+1'd. It seems anyone can take one or give one. On Forums I administrate they're known as "Likes and Dislikes." If you like a post you hit the Plus Button If you Don't Hit the dislike. It's not important on there. Because it's really just someone giving their own opinion. On here it Seems more important because it's labeled "Reputation." I myself could careless about my reputation. I have nothing but bad reputation on here anyway.legodac wrote:I have been a member for a while and though my attendance has been to say the least in frequent, the hardest part is when I see my status is a rep of zero.

Re: Reputation : lo and behold eh
Thank you. Reputation however is a powerful word, and I will say again used to lightly with the power to wield it can seriously damage.
I have a goal in my life and it includes every thing that has to do with Lego, so reputation means something, especially when it is taken away without even a word.
Thank you again Fatcatnine, seems someone has travelled this road...
PSS no, not departing

Re: Reputation : lo and behold eh
Reputation is the DEFAULT name that Forumotion provides for the ability to have ratings for a particular post.
Mods do not have the ability to change it directly - they can as a member choose to + or - on a single post.
Admins to have the ability to choose to 1. Rename the field 2. Define what level of members is affected ie guest or member, 3. Choose to display it on the profile, message or not at all.
There have been controversies about this field and a search using the term 'Reputation' would have provided 2 links on this forum:
http://mlnteam.forumotion.com/t11857-thanks-points-and-reputation-poll?highlight=reputation

Re: Reputation : lo and behold eh
I know this. As for I was the one who changed it to "Like and Dislike." I'd say changing it to a different name or removing it at all together would be best. No one would get offended that way. Or you could change it to a Text Field Called Reputation that only Mods and Admins could change. That way if they see someone doing a good deed such as helping a new member or reporting a post; They could add a Rep Point.lindavz wrote:Reputation is the DEFAULT name that Forumotion provides for the ability to have ratings for a particular post.

Re: Reputation : lo and behold eh
Please take a moment to read the links regarding reputation that are mentioned above as I provide several different options.
1. I have no problem renaming the field as mentioned it was the default name.
2. The only way to have 'only' mods and admins change it is for there to be 0 rating in the forum and only all the mods to change it in the archive area.
3. The 'intent' of the field is for the forum to 'police itself' and for it's members to choose how to do so. The mods have no ability to change that number if it's mis-used. It's meant to encourage, not discourage
4. I don't know as I have not researched recently whether there is an ability to not allow negative numbers by members and only by mods - I think it would only be in the case of 2 above.

Reputation isn't the key to popularity.
It's being nice to other people, that is the key. Don't worry about reputation!

Re: Reputation : lo and behold eh
The problem here is if we are on a G forum with a lot of 8, 9, 10 yrs olds then they will see Reputation and it's a natural instinct to go "I must have more then others to be classed as cool" you can shout till kingdom come and some people still won't listen to you. Even the word "Likes: 7" would be taken as "7 people like him/her, I want more I only have 1". If we are on a G forum then rep. isn't really a good thing in any case. I know from experience that young kids in schools take the word "Reputation" and "Like" the wrong way and even in example in my school today people who are 13-14 think "Reputation" is important to be a cool person and have friends when in fact this is not the case.

1. We are a G forum
2. We are an age 13+ forum but we allow parental written permission see here (note that this has been this way for over a years, perhaps 2):
http://mlnteam.forumotion.com/register
"By clicking on " I agree to these terms " below:
- You acknowledge to have fully read these current rules;
- You commit yourself to respect unreservedly these current rules;
- You grant the moderators of this forum the right to delete, move or edit any discussion subject at any moment.
You need to be 13 years or older to join this forum, if you are younger you have to ask for parental permission (COPPA)
This board is here for support and help for those interested in MLN (My Lego Network). So, it is important to keep this board clean, G rated and for everyone's comfort and these following rules are here to help it."
3. As mentioned there are options to both rename the field and also choose which forums that a + or - is available in - ie only some of the areas such as reviews or welcome for example.
4. There is an option to only allow positive votes but not negative votes, however the code is only in PUNBB or PHPBB2. We are currently PHPBB3.

Re: Reputation : lo and behold eh
Reputation isn't a good thing, IMO.
Since it really only constitutes popularity.
On another forum I'm on, reputation used to exist, but because of the abuse of the feature, and because it was causing a lot of useless arguments, it was removed.
Now, if specific rules are put in place about reputation, it can work.

Re: Reputation : lo and behold eh
I think I found the issue. I gave a positive vote to someone, and their rep went DOWN by 1. I then gave the same person a negative vote, and it also went DOWN! So if you even give a positive vote to someone, their rep goes down! Could someone look into this?

There was a problem in the Rep system so that each positive rep given was negative.

Re: Reputation : lo and behold eh
A better note, I beg to differ. When something bad or problems happen in a forum, people look to the Admins or in the real world, their leaders. They may be looking for answers or perhaps even pointing a finger as to who should be blamed. This is the cross that all leaders must bare.
On the other hand, when something great happens, that same examination is also prevalent. You see, you may not have been the one who caused or even fixed the problem lindavz, but you are one who has made steps in the past to keep people coming back to the forum, people with skills in many different areas.
That is a testament to great leadership and a fine argument to your last post, again, I say thanks.

Re: Reputation : lo and behold eh
Clarification, I was giving / passing along the credit to JDG for his fine work. As an admin that's what I would have expected from him and this is clearly an example of why he was chosen for this role.
As to why it was like that in the past? I don't know nor was I indicating any specific person - more what I was was conveying what it was not a result of the staff change.
And I thank the entire staff for their help and assistance- and I thanks the members for their participation. For example, I know that tennisdude has posted often and taken on leadership for things and we appreciate that. And thanks to you for the reviews and things that you have done as well.
Thanks
